Famous motivational speaker Zig Zigler had a great quote about staying on track. He said that "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing- that's why we recommend it daily." For most of us, when we decide on a goal we feel an initial burst of motivation and enthusiasm, a highly emotional response that propels us to start working towards what we desire. Unfortunately, this emotional response fades over time, and often completely falls apart once you reach the first road block on your quest for success. That's why it's a good idea to make sure you keep yourself constantly reminded of what you wish to achieve.
There are actually a lot of ways to stay motivated on a day to day basis. Most of these tactics have to do with constantly reminding yourself just exactly WHY you are doing what you're doing. Here are a few recommendations for making sure your motivation becomes inescapable:
- The biggest source of motivation for most of us tends to be other people. Often, simply knowing that other people are going through the same struggles that we are is enough to muster up some energy and courage to push towards our goals. By staying in constant contact with these people, motivation often comes easily. This can be accomplished through many ways, including finding a partner in crime, finding an online forum devoted to the topic you're pursuing, or even starting a regularly meeting in person mastermind group.
- Of course, finding the right mentor is another great way to feel motivated by other people. While it's great when you find a mentor with whom you can meet or converse with regularly, it can often be enough to simply follow them by reading their books, watching their videos, or listening to them speak. The internet has been a real boon for this form of remote mentorship, as it puts us in greater and more frequent contact with potential mentors than ever before. Social media like twitter and facebook keep us in touch with a constant stream of mentorship, blogs provide a regular dose of slightly lengthier content from successful people, and e-mail makes it easier than ever to try and develop a relationship with these inspiring people.
- Friends and family can be another source of inspiration. Many very hard working people have found great strength and inspiration from their families, especially from their children. I know I personally find a lot of inspiration from my friends- both because they are all remarkable people whom I want to live up to, but also because I want to make sure that I can share an exciting life with them wherein we all reach our goals.
- Of course, people can also provide motivation through negative example. For instance, you can find a reverse-mentor; someone who is doing the opposite of what you want. It doesn't even have to be an individual, it can just be an archetype. For instance, lifestyle design guru Tim Ferriss says he is motivated by what he calls the "Fat Middle Aged Man in a Red BMW." He's not talking about a specific person, rather he is referring to an archetype that he never wanted to become. By having a clear picture of what he didn't want, Ferriss was able to run in the opposite direction, allowing him to reach his goal of continually living an exciting and interesting life.
